![]() ![]() Similar to Babbel, I like how they encourage you to practice speaking and use voice recognition software. There are also writing exercises which are definitely helpful. I like how the audio is included with each picture, that they use different speakers, and that the audio is very high-quality. A quick explanation in English could erase a lot of that uncertainty. While some simple grammar points are easily understood this way, learning more complex grammar like this will likely leave the learner confused. This is even worse when it comes to grammar. But, not all vocabulary is easily understood from pictures alone. This works alright for teaching a lot of vocabulary, and even simple grammar points. Using Rosetta Stone basically amounts to a long stream of matching pictures to words or sentences. The lessons on Rosetta stone, while they include various skills such as listening and writing, are very repetitive regardless of the content. We have some advantages that children don’t have, and ignoring these makes language learning harder than it needs to be. Adults are much different than young children. Their philosophy is basically that young children learn languages from immersion and that you should as well. The key differentiating factor that makes Rosetta Stone different than other language learning courses is that uses your target language almost exclusively. Instead, they excel in providing well-structured courses, clear explanations, and a variety of ways to practice the content.īabbel’s lessons aren’t the most exciting or varied, but Rosetta Stone’s are even less so. There are also review exercises after every couple of lessons.īabbel’s strengths aren’t in that they’re doing anything exceptionally innovative. Grammar may not be the most exciting thing, but learning it can make things so much easier. I think this is a major advantage over Rosetta Stone. You’ll also find grammar lessons that clearly explain things here with pop-up notes to explain some key points. The quality of the audio is also quite good and it’s spoken clearly. The dialogues are very natural and are the type of conversation you would actually have in real life. This is pretty simple since you’re given the mixed up letters. You’ll fill in the blanks with the correct word to complete the sentence. These aren’t terribly exciting exercises, but the repetition is helpful.įollowing this, the words come together to form sentences and finally a dialogue. Next, you’ll write the translation that corresponds to each image using the mixed up letters you’re given. To get good feedback on your speaking, I’d recommend finding a tutor on italki – it’s often less than $10/hr.įrom there, you’ll match the translations to the pictures. It’s nice that it encourages you to get speaking aloud, but the technology isn’t good enough that you can trust it on its own to know if your pronunciation is alright. They start with a speaker reading the important words you’ll need to learn with images next to them.Īfter that, you’ll listen to and repeat the words using their voice recognition software which then gives you a grade based on how accurate your pronunciation was. Most, if not all things they do, can also be found within other language learning platforms. To see my favorite resources in any language, click the link in the table below.īabbel’s lessons are a pretty good way to get started, but they’re far from unique. I can’t list them all here because my recommendations would vary depending on which language you’re learning. That said, there are far more resources to consider than just these two platforms. If I were choosing between just these two options, Babbel would definitely be my preference and recommendation. They teach several different languages but aren’t the best for learning about different cultures. The voice recognition software for both is only okay and not too reliable. Both platforms have well-structured lessons that build on each other but can get too repetitive.Babbel teaches using longer dialogues and Rosetta Stone uses more individual sentences. ![]() Babbel is a little cheaper and includes explanations and translations in English whereas Rosetta Stone uses your target language almost exclusively. The quickest way to describe the similarities and differences between these two platforms would be… Most people looking to get started studying are likely to have come across these two programs early on in their search for the course they want to use. Select Node 3, add in a power window to select part of the image and make your adjustments - they will only affect what's inside the power window. It may help to think of serial nodes as layers, as you would find in other photo / video editing packages, so you might want to do your basic colour corrections in Node 1, then apply some grading in a new serial node (Node 2), then add another serial node (Node 3) and an outside node (Node 4). I'll be taking a look at those in due course, next week we finish off on our tour around the Color window (making some adjustments as we go), then the following week I'm hoping to start colour correction and grading (and that means adding nodes). Okay - nodes can be confusing - serial, parallel, outside and so on. Watch the video to find out how I did it. In order to provide a solution, we were going to need qualifiers and keyframes - how would you solve this problem? This would have the effect of supporting the focus shift. ![]() The easiest way would be to set up a qualifier to only affect the background object, but I thought that a nicer solution might be to have the exposure increased on the background, and brought down on the foreground, as the focus shifted. What was needed was a solution that allowed the exposure to be brought up on the background object, without over-exposing the foreground. The foreground object had been lit properly and resulted in a well-exposed subject, but when shifting focus to the background subject it was found that it was under-exposed. Speaking of the next season, each cast member was asked - since they don’t know what’s going to happen yet - what they hope is for their characters. “I think of it as one piece - there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece,” Sklenar says. ![]() That said, while nothing is certain, the cast expects the second season will probably wrap the show. While 1923 was initially envisioned as a single-season limited series, Sheridan ended up expanding the show to a second season, which is expected to start production sometime this year. In another tidbit, Sheridan once gave a note about the dullness of slow horse scenes: “‘I never want to see a horse walking,'” Mirren recalled. “There’s a rhythm to the way the characters speak.” “There’s definitely a musicality to it,” agreed Brandon Sklenar (Spencer Dutton). But I always found there was always a really good reason for it that you could find, and I found it really important to do the lines exactly as written and not the ‘easy’ way. “Because it’s not the obvious or the straightforward way to say something. “Sometimes you get a weird sentence construction and you go, ‘Why does it go like that?'” recalls Helen Mirren (Cara Dutton). That meaning extended to Sheridan’s dialogue, which frequently uses unconventional sentence structures (example: “Why danger gives men such pleasure, I’ll never understand”). Look at my internet history, my social media, ask me what’s new…you’ll hear about it. It’s pretty much on my mind all the time and all I want to talk about. I can’t necessarily control when hyperfocus will engage, but I can try to make it happen it by setting up a scenario where I have a chunk of time set aside for a project I’m excited about. But if it’s recreational, well, you’ve seen I can easily waste a day or more. If it’s a work project I’m excited about, I can research and plan and create for hours. I’d developed a blister from playing on those unforgiving boxy controllers all day, but hadn’t realized the pain until I was called away. When I was called to dinner I found that my thumb hurt. When the hyperfocus is broken, typically by my partner returning home, I will often find myself very hungry and needing to use “the facilities.” As a kid I played The Legend of Zelda on NES all day long. I may play a video game for 6-8 hours straight, not eating or taking care of any other needs. While I’m in hyperfocus I will completely lose track of time. So while a screen doesn’t have to be present for me to hyperfocus, it’s very common that there is one. One of the reasons that screens are so common to my hyperfocus ability is that whether a work project or entertainment at home, I’m most likely using a screen of some kind. Without a screen I can’t stop fidgeting to save my life. When asked if I could sit still for prolonged periods, my automatic answer was, yes! But as I considered it, I had to add…if there’s a screen. This was actually one of my “ah-ha” moments in analyzing my ADHD. Frequently there is a screen involved, whether it’s a computer, television, e-reader, or smartphone. You will notice an intense level of focus and stillness. And while I may have a fixation that occupies much of my time and thought during a day, I may not actually be engaging in hyperfocus. While I can hyperfocus on just about anything if my interest level is high enough in the moment, I’m most likely to be found hyperfocusing on my current fixation. So, why the confusion about the words? I believe it’s because they often show up together. I don’t claim to be in charge of these terms, but while I use them in this post I want you to understand how I’m using them so that I can speak clearly about them. Hyperfocus: the ability or act of intensely focusing on an activity or task to the exclusion of awareness of time and surroundings.įixation: a topic, person, object, or activity that becomes the primary focus of an individual for days, weeks, or more. Don’t worry, they’ve been vetted by Twitter – haha! Here are the working definitions I’ve come up with. So this week I dove in once again to really try to get a handle on these two terms so that I could write somewhat intelligently about them. It seems everywhere I look there’s a different take on what they mean and how they’re related. I’ve seen them used both distinctly and interchangeably. Hyperfocus and fixation were two of the first words I heard associated with ADHD when I started learning about it. ![]() ![]() addfact(q109_keira_to_km) - sent Keira to Kaer Morhen.addfact(q109_keira_to_radovid) - completed Keira's quest line and let her go to Radovid (and die).addfact(mq3035_fdb_roche_talar_dead) - let Dijkstra win in Reason of State (add this and Radovid dead = Dijkstra wins).addfact(mq3035_free_temeria) - killed Dijkstra in Reason of State (add both this and the above = Nilfgaard wins, neither = Radovid wins). ![]() addfact(mq3035_fdb_radovid_dead) - assassinated Radovid in Reason of State.addfact(q206_svanrige_king) - ** Svanrige is king of Skellige (remove both this and the above to make Cerys queen).addfact(q206_hjalmar_king) - ** Hjalmar is king of Skellige.addfact(q206_completed) - ** helped Cerys or Hjalmar after the massacre in Kaer Trolde.addfact(sq202_yen_girlfriend) - romanced Yennefer in The Last Wish.addfact(q309_triss_stayed) - romanced Triss in Now or Never (you need to set both this and the above fact).addfact(q309_triss_lover) - romanced Triss in Now or Never.addfact(q309_completed) - completed Now or Never.addfact(q210_skjall_done) - went to Skjall's grave with Ciri (good choice).addfact(q210_gave_lara_necklace) - did not let Ciri destroy Avallac'h's lab (bad choice).addfact(q310_ciri_faced_lodge) - let Ciri talk to the Lodge alone (good choice).addfact(q110_refused_reward) - did not accept the reward from Emhyr for bringing back Ciri (good choice).addfact(q110_visited_emhyr) - visited Emhyr with Ciri after The Battle of Kaer Morhen (required for empress ending).addfact(q110_calmed_down_ciri) - had a snowball fight with Ciri after The Battle of Kaer Morhen (good choice).Try to avoid combinations of facts that make no sense. ![]() (Plus, I for one find it difficult to imagine Christ getting angry at a group of mourners to the point of tears because they hadn’t fact checked their views about death and the afterlife!) He made clear already there was a happy ending coming, surely grief and sorrow could not be the source of these tears.īut the obvious reading of the narrative, particularly as Jesus is not only a blubbing, horse-snorting muddle when he sees others weeping, but weeps himself when he goes to the place where Lazarus is laid, and was greatly disturbed again when he came to the tomb (v38), is that, regardless of the happy ending, Christ was moved by his grief as he tasted the absence of his beloved friend. ![]() This must explain, they say, why Jesus was moved and wept. In fact, the phrase ‘deeply moved’ (the horse snort!) was typically used to denote anger. They thought death was the end, so ‘when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved’ because they could not see the fullness of the truth. Some have argued that Jesus was moved in a negative way and came to weep at the people’s misunderstanding of death and/or lack of faith. The word used for the phrase that Jesus was deeply moved in spirit is that for the snorting of a horse! At this point Jesus has moved from calm resolve and assurance of Lazarus’ resurrection to being a bit of a blubbing mess. For Jesus to then be ‘deeply moved in spirit and troubled’ (v33) and to weep at the tomb of Lazarus, having already stated that Lazarus would live again, makes no sense at all. He even says to the disciples, ‘Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe’, which can be translated as the astonishing, ‘Lazarus is dead, and I rejoice … ’ (vv14–15). He tells Martha that her brother will rise again (v23). When he heard of Lazarus’ illness, he responds by saying that ‘this illness is not unto death’ (v4) and follows with ‘our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awake him out of sleep’ (v11). In the logic of John’s telling of this story, Jesus’ weeping and being overcome by emotion doesn’t really make any sense. We forget that more striking in the narrative than our identification with Martha or Mary or the disciples or even Lazarus, is Christ’s identification with us-Christ’s presence with us as he experiences the absence of his friend. But if we stay there in the absence too long, we forget the heart-stopping, ground-breaking depth of the presence. That place of desolation as we face catastrophic circumstances, and certainly when we face personal and direct loss, is real-maybe necessary. Perhaps we can identify quite closely with Martha and Martha in this passage in John’s Gospel as they say to Jesus: ‘Lord, if only you had been here’ (John 11.21, 32). But the most profound absence we sense as we confront images and headlines of people in Italy not only dying alone but being buried alone, too, is the absence of God. In these times of loss and trial, it is often the absence that is felt most-absence of information, of security, of certainty, and particularly in the current moment, absence of others as we remain mostly isolated. Many of us are struggling to cope psychologically, and some also physically. ![]() Images covering the news feed spread from soaring unemployment rates to plunging markets from over-flooded hospitals to solitary funerals.
